Kindness

Sometimes to be kind we have to sacrifice ourselves. However, in long run it could be rewarding, but there are no guarantees. What is the best choice? Do we simply have on circumstances alone? Who says that this would help us to make a better judgement of situation?
I suppose the only other option left is to guess as we go.

I think it depends how we sacrifice ourselves.

Giving and being generous is good, but ... and I hate to say it, it must be properly received.

I don't want to say that we shoudl expect reciprocation - because we shouldn't. But, if we are giving to someone who is selfish, then we are being drained and used and that is not being generous or kind but foolish.

Spot on Richard. Selfish people should not receive even the generosity of our time let alone efforts. Unfortunately sometimes we want to think better of people than they really are.

Always give them the benefit of the doubt, until proven otherwise.

I do but my patience has it's limits!

Sure, and at that might be the point when you give up on them. I didn't say give them the benefit of the doubt indefinitely.
