it seems the higher the standards for one's person the graver the disappointments. i can not come up with a solution. lower the standards or try to fix something that is about to fall apart?

For me, "do what is right" is the only standard. Yeah, I am human and fall short of always upholding it, of always demanding it. But, I would always choose no evil over the lesser of two evils.
Choose to do what is best. I leave the definition of best as a philosophical exercise for the reader
