13th of January 1991

This morning I had to turn up at work early because the whole school were paying respects to those who have died on the January the 13th. I do have to admit that the whole event was rather nice, in fact not that badly organised at all.

However this is not what I want to talk about.

For me it has always been a puzzle, how come a nation that was so united during the darkest hours of it's history is so divided in those days that are quite comfortable, a very difficult question indeed. The main disease around the world these days after all is apathy, we have all seen the pictures of badly injured children, we have seen people that are only skin and bones from famine and now we have even seen the face of cholera, still Lithuanians stood together 18 years ago, why can't they do that now, for ourselves.

Back then Lithuanians had a common enemy, I wonder if that is the reason, why it was so easily possible to be brave and do extraordinary things, why it was possible to hold hands and sing while facing the tanks?

As you know I am no great patriot, I'm simply wondering, as I have written before those days were horrible and are gone, but we (Lithuanians) stood together and were strong what happened?

I have picked up a few videos of the internet to show what happened:

How come a nation that was able to stand together holding hands and singing bare handed against tanks become so separated, how did we do that?

I think it was caesar who said: "In all curiosities it is right to ask, cui bono? who benefits?"

A false internationalism is being engendered, and it favours business banks and bureaucrats - always the truly unproductive ( not the underclass) at the expense of the productive.

I think this could be the modern version of divide and rule, and only uniting the nation temporarily when it is convenient against a common (temporary) enemy

At times I think that humankind is intent on destroying itself. History has shown that to be true.

Take care...be well...
