Yesterday on the way to the post office in Lannemezan, we had (as always) to get the rubbish out of the boot. Somewhere near Izaux we noticed a couple of bins. So my wonderful husband stopped the car by the bins and jumped out to get rid of the rubbish. Once he got back into the car, he proudly announced:
- Would you like some old French jars?
- Are they nice; I asked.
- Go and have a look.
And so I did. Slowly I got out of the car all embarrassed and stared into the rubbish. In that big bin with a bright yellow lid on, there was a huge collection of beautiful old French jars. Perfect for pickling eggs and tomatoes, putting homemade jam in etc.
So I rolled my sleeves up, asked my husband to hold the yellow lid and started collecting rubbish – literally!
When we got home I stuck all those dirty jars into the sink to soak. Excitedly waiting for the result. I just couldn’t wait to buy some vinegar so I can pickle all those things. Few hours later I started slowly scrubbing them. What beautiful jars they became once they have become clean. They had a word Parfait on them (if I spelled it right) and apart from the rubber being in poor condition they looked great.
I sorted them all out, threw away the worn off rubbers and the jars that didn’t have any. I have now six beautiful jars. Two big ones, one slightly smaller, two little ones and one jar which I decided to name mini. I am still a bit embarrassed of the fact that I dug into someone’s rubbish but it was all worth it!I just discovered that the new design Le Parfait jars cost twenty pounds in England and the ones I have are antique! Though for some reason my husband didn’t let me to talk him into going for the bin and getting some more as the rubbish is being collected tomorrow… My encouragements were in vein. He doesn’t like them; they’re old ugly, rusty and tired. What’s the point? Well I fancied the idea of having a collection of antique jars full of pickles! Well I guess I’ll have to be happy with the six I’ve got! Never mind there is a rubbish bin full somewhere… Well at least until tomorrow morning.
